Vintage Malvern Star moto Path Racer

Dan (my mate from NY) and I dropped my Hell On Wheels on Saturday and I tried shooting off some snaps of the vintage Malvern Star path racer they have in there, built up by Nigel Houston Begg, kinda one of the original founders of Deus. Nigel goes around doing crazy stuff on bicycles and has recently started getting into sticking engines into them. Sort of how the whole motorcycle thing came about. So here's a Houston Original, shot through the glass of Hell On Wheels. Underneath all of that is a POS piece on DMOTE, Creative Director of RVCA and ex-flatmate and inspirational graphic design and typographic guru.

Down at Deus yesterday, up on the stand is one of the Cinelli / RVCA collabs featuring the artist Barry McGee. First time I've seen one in the flesh, awesome stuff. $8,500 frame only plus on road costs and it's yours!

Melburn

Buzzed down to Melbourne on the weekend and fell in love all over again. Here is the Citylights laneway, covered in graffiti and lightboxes featuring work by local artist Ash Nolan, sitting on top of a piece by Adnate.Melbourne is truly Australia's only international city, the city actually feels like it's alive. Bikes everywhere, people riding them, girls in skirts and heels riding steel ladies bikes. Quality fixies and track bikes, bmxers, roadies, crappy old ten speeds, townies. The bicycle culture in Melbourne is going thru the roof. It is such a practical place for bikes, except for the train tracks.And all the laneways, sidestreets and alleys that create this incredible intrigue, filled with cafes and upstairs bars with french windows that look down into the alley. Gorgeous girls and svelte males wandering around. This one is called Hells Kitchen in Centre Place.

Brett Whiteley

Brett Whiteley has been the single most important influence on my Art and Life since discovering him in Year 8. Listening to Mother's Milk and studying 3 unit Art in Year 11 and 12 and Oliver and Briony and Greer and Nadine and Chris and Dustin and Jo and sitting on the front lawn of Orange High and hearing the news that he died on that afternoon in '92. The curl, the swirl, drawing calligraphically. The nude, the lewd, Surry Hills, Lavender Bay. What style. Arkie. What a loss.

DMOTE x Cinelli

I've been a big fan of Dmoter's work for many years, one of Australia's most innovative typograffers... It's been interesting watching his style and focus change over the years, and seeing him applying his art to, initially, train carriages to Tsubi shirts and sunglasses. More recently, however, his work has been found on some Cinelli track bikes, through a colab between RVCA and Cinelli. The result is an exhibition called 'Pressure'. Bikes and art.
